Earache and Infection Folk Remedies
Earaches can be quite painful, usually when you get a cold or an upper respiratory infection, earaches are quick to follow. Small children are the most afflicted with ear ache, we tend to think that as they get older they outgrow them, but there is a medical explanation…..
The angle of a child’s Eustachian tube creates a place for fluid to gather, as most of us know, wet, warm places are just what bacteria need to thrive. As a child grows older the Eustachian tube takes a more downward direction allowing fluids to drain and decreasing ear infections.
Garlic has an anti-biotic effect, so it works very well for earaches. Take some garlic cloves and crush them saving the juice, the juice can be warmed by putting it in a spoon and holding it close to a stove burner or over a candle flame. Equal amounts of sesame oil and fresh ginger juice can also be used as ear drops. Warm the juice and put 3 drops into the affected ear and then insert a cotton ball to hold the liquid inside the ear canal.
A soothing chamomile poultice is also effective in stopping earache pain. The loose herbs are preferred, but if you don’t have any on hand, chamomile tea bags can be soaked in warm water and used instead.
The essential oil of St. John’s Wort is claimed to give almost instant relief for earaches.
Warm a small amount and add several drops to the ear, then place a hot water bottle filled with warm water against the ear until the pain is gone.
A clinical study conducted with over 100 children, showed that St. John’s Wort, when combined with other herbs, relieved earache pain as effectively as standard ear drops. Mix these oils, St. John’s Wort, garlic, calendula and mullein flower for an effective earache remedy.
The juice from an onion can relieve earache pain in just a matter of minutes. Steam an onion with the skin on to retain as much of the juice as possible, once the onion has became soft, the onion can be cut and the juice extracted with a garlic press. A few drops of the warm juice can then be dropped into the ear.
Cinnamon oil also makes an excellent pain reliever for earache! You can easily make your own by adding some powdered cinnamon to some olive oil. If you want to prepare some to have on hand, it can be placed in a small cooker and heated until the cinnamon dissolves and then poured into a bottle.
If you’re in a hurry, the cinnamon and olive oil can be heated in a spoon held over a heat source. The oil should be strained through a cloth and then several drops of the warm oil can be inserted into the ear.
Another herbal remedy dating back to the 18th century is to place a few drops of warmed sweet almond oil into the ear, it is said to relieve pain instantly. Other oils that may work depending on the severity of the pain and the cause, are plain olive oil and mineral oil.
